TELEPHONE COMPANY & SERVICES:
West Iowa Telephone Company provides private line telephone service to the
towns of Alton, Anita, Calumet, Marcus, Quimby, Oyens, Remsen and Sutherland
and the surrounding rural area. The company uses digital switching and
predominantly buried cable plant to provide high quality voice and data
circuits to meet the needs of business and residential customer needs West
Iowa Telephone also offers custom calling features, voice mail, video
conferencing, and internet services to its customers. Our customers have
centralized equal access with Iowa Network Services as the provider of this
service. Both intralata and interlata equal access is available. All
outgoing long distance calls placed by our customers are routed over 100%
fiber optics facilities.
SCHOOLS:
We have one public school with grades K-12 and
an enrollment of 441 students. Remsen has one parochial
school with grades K-12 and an enrollment of 345
students. There are two four year colleges within 20
miles.
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS:
Remsen has an annual Oktoberfest
Celebration held on the last Saturday in October. For more information please

AGRICULTURE:
Our regional economy is strongly
agricultural based with cattle, hogs, corn and beans as
the major source of income.
FESTIVALS & CELEBRATIONS:
Annual Oktoberfest Celebration is held the last Saturday in October and
features a traditional German meal(American also
available) served family style and a large craft
display. A number of Polka bands provide the
entertainment during the celebration.
REAL ESTATE:
A new subdivision with 22 building lots
remaining is available for new homebuilders. The
subdivision is adjacent to the local golf course.
CHURCHES:
There is one Catholic church and two
Protestant churches located in Remsen to serve the
community.
LIBRARY:
We have one municipally owned library with
inter-library loan program which allows access to all
libraries across the United States.
BRAGGING RIGHTS:
Remsen St. Mary's High School is the
home of the Hawks who were state baseball champions six
times from the fall of 1980 through the summer of 1985.
There continues to be a strong recreational
baseball/softball program for all ages.
